Busy, busy, busy...

Waiting for the stove…

It has been a busy week.  I have been picking up items for a silent auction for PABA (Parkesburg Area Business Association), grocery shopping, going through more ‘stuff’ from the Maryland home, took two of my finished quilt tops to my quilter in Delaware, attended a free lunch sales pitch for a new type of attic insulation… I went for the free lunch and will pass on the insulation…visited with a couple of Rudy’s favorite co-workers, played Animal Crossings each night, totally cleaned the area where the new stove will be going, including the toaster oven I have not touched in quite a while.  Still a couple of things to do, but Sears should be coming between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM with my new stove.  It will not be connected until tomorrow, but it will be ready to be converted to propane and then connected to the supply line.

I did manage to get all of the items that I am saving from the Maryland house put away into the cabinets in the kitchen.  I find there are days when I do a fairly good job at purging things I have not used in years as well as getting rid of things that are well over 40 years old, like plastic containers that look and smell wonky.  It made room for my Temp-tations oven wear casseroles and piggy soup bowls.

This evening my BFF Debby is coming over.  She just got a new Kindle Fire HD and she is hoping that I will be able to help her learn how it works.  I do not know how it will work out as I do not have a Kindle, but it will be fun to play with it.  Debby also wants to see the stove.  She will be able to look at it, just not get a meal out of it until the next time she comes over.

Hopefully today I will be able to get a little more sewing some.

Whew…. No wonder I am tired!

Another Change in the works...

Not too bad…..

So, yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day.  I did a twist on the traditional food.  My mother had found a recipe for Corned Beef Baked in Foil.  Instead of the traditional boiled method of cooking, you soak the brisket in water and then bake it in a foil pouch along with a variety of spices and vegetables for about 4 hours @ 300 degrees.  It has such a wonderful flavor and is delightfully tender.  So, for its final meal, my stove… which took close to 5 minutes to even get started heating up… cooked a wonderful meal.  Marji and Danny joined me and we ate the entire brisket and almost an entire head of cabbage.  After eating and giving the stove a chance to cool down, we set about the task of taking the oven out.

I am always fearful of pulling heavy appliances away from their home.  I am not the Merry Homemaker who twice a year gets behind every piece of furniture, picture on the wall and under appliances to make sure the dust bunnies and grease blobs are kept at bay!  Once an appliance goes into place, unless a large spill clearly goes under the appliance, it stays in place until such a spill or until it needs to be repaired or until it is replaced.

I was pleasantly surprised.  Yes, there was dust.  Yes, there were a few little mouse droppings but I live in the country and a mouse or two are commonplace from time to time.  There were some smarmy little areas of an unknown gooey substance, but overall, for the length of time the stove has been in place, it was not nearly as bad as I expected.  I was able to sweep the moveable stuff away and a quick scrubbing has removed the smarmy stuff from the floor and the sides of the cabinet.

I am now in the process of cleaning the toaster oven.  Since the stove will be out of the way for a couple of days, I am really giving it a good cleaning.  It is mounted under the cabinet and over the stove so it is awkward to clean.  The crumb tray drops down but that has junk coming down onto the stove-top, so it has not been done in a long, long time.  Can you say “Very Smarmy”?

The new stove is stainless steel.  I am not sure I am going to like it, but that seems to be the ‘high end’ look in kitchens these days.  I wanted Bisque.  But that is not an “in” color these days so my options were white or stainless.  So stainless was my selection.  I had thought that I wanted a double oven in a free standing stove, but I would lose a storage drawer and the bigger oven was closer to the floor, so removing heavy items like a turkey would require more bending than I wanted to do, so single oven was my choice.  This over in convection, so there is a fan that runs to circulate the air and cook things faster.  Not sure I will use it, but it came with the package and sometimes faster is better.  It also has five burners.  The four normal on corners each have a burner and then a center oval burner that will accommodate a bigger griddle or cook a larger kettle better.  That was the feature I did want.  So I am looking forward to being able to cook and bake in a new oven.

In the meantime, I went to Wal-Mart today and got dog food for Miss Molly and then some microwaveable pre-made foods to give me a menu for these days without the stove.

No GriefShare tonight as the weather here is threatening to ice up the roads.  As we called all of the participants, they all seemed grateful to not have to go out this evening.  I am guessing that it is going to be a nuisance kind of storm and that the roads will be fine.  But I am just as glad to be home tonight as well.  I am ready for spring, even though it means I will have to start mowing the lawn!

Many Happy.. Days...

Happy National Quilting Day….

It is also Maple Syrup Day.  So, pancakes for dinner!!!

Today was a day that I set aside to do some fun things just for me.  I like to try to do that on most Saturdays, but usually life gets in the way.  Today, it was MY Day!!!

I had done my laundry yesterday and cleared the decks of stuff, so today I could sew.  The lady who does the Quilting Retreat in November does “Mystery” Quilts at least 6 times a year and in return we donate money to Relay for Life.  I had the fabric but had not managed to get the cutting done, so I just watched as the clues for the steps to building the quilt came in during the day.  (It is a delightful quilt and I will get to it soon.)  Instead I got the batting/backing cut and stitched for the two strip quilts I completed last fall.  I called the lady who does my machine quilting and will take them to her next week.  Then I got out strips I had available and used up the leftover batting to do a rag quilt that I have wanted to do for a while.  I have gotten almost a third of the strips sandwiched and would like to have it finished by the end of the week.  So I did do some quilting on National Quilting Day!!

Tomorrow I will be seeing Danny and perhaps Marji.  I have a new stove being delivered on Thursday.  Danny is going to unhook the stove from the propane and then I will have to contact my gas company to set up an install on Friday or early next week.

The rest of my week is fast filling up.  I wonder how I managed to work a full-time job???

So, I wish you a Happy Saint Patrick’s Day on Sunday.  This would have been the opening weekend at Indian Acres, and honestly, I am happy to not have that chore ahead of me.

Springing Forward, but...

I Do Not Like Springing Forward…

Now, do not misunderstand me.  I LOVE having the sun being out longer during the day.  I feel like spring is just around the corner.  I just really dislike the process of losing that hour of sleep to move the clocks ahead.

This time adjustment has really gotten to me.  I had to be up earlier today as I was in charge of getting the coffee going for the Sunday school.  So by the time I got home and had my bowl of soup for lunch, I had a roaring headache.  I do not normally get headaches, so I decided to give in and go in to take a nap.  I slept for 4 hours.  Not something I normally do.

But I am feeling much better.  I have a busy week ahead of me.  I have GriefShare tomorrow night, a Red Hat lunch on Tuesday, spending time in Maryland with Debby & Marji on Wednesday, and Lions Club on Thursday.  I also need to prepare for another Mystery Quilt sewing Saturday for this weekend. Oh yeah, I also need to finish checking my tax stuff and get it to my accountant.

At least there will be more daylight for the week and my nap got rid of the headache!

Verizon Strikes Again...

Another change for Jane….

I had a phone call this morning around 9:15 AM… “Hello, this is your Verizon Tech.  I am scheduled to do some work at your house.  I will be arriving in about 20 minutes.”  “OK”, I said… thinking he was supposed to be here after 11:00 AM… sure glad I am already showered and dressed!

I had contacted Verizon about an offer that they had to increase my Internet speed.  I had a very nice lady and we chatted quite a while.  She went over all of my account and what they could offer me.  You see, I have Internet and Phone with them and have had for a long, long time.  Since they added TV, they have dangled ‘package’ deals in front of me for all three services.  But, as long as I had the property in Maryland, I was going to keep DirecTV as I had a dish mounted there and could bring one of my boxes from home down for the summer and not have a separate cable bill.  BUT, as you know, I sold that property at the end of the year so I no longer needed that service.  And since the cost of the three services from Verizon was just about what I was paying for two, I arranged to make the change from DirecTV and install FIOS everything and kick up my Internet speed to 50/20.

So the young man arrived early, looked over the scope of his work and set about connecting everything that needed to be connected.  I will be paying for a couple of boxes, but overall, I will have close to a $50.00 per month savings while gaining a really superior picture and On Demand.

I had asked him about my router that had been installed many years ago.  Over the last several months, since installed my web cams, I have had to reboot my router about once a week.  The tech was not sure he could do anything, but after checking his work orders and my account, he brought in a new router and we got it hooked up and running.  I was able to get the wireless operational and then had to set about resetting every single wireless device I had in the house.  IPad, cell phone, 4 web cams, laptop, 3 Roku boxes, 1 Blu-Ray player are the ones I thought of, but I am sure there will be one that will pop-up that I have not thought of.

The television picture is amazing.  It is sharp and crisp and the colors phenomenal.  I have not lost any of my favorite channels and may have gained some new ones.  I have HD cable in the bedroom and the office as well.  Woo Hoo!

The Internet has changed also.  I ran a speed test just to verify that they had tweaked my settings and to see if the promised speed was actually there.  The picture speaks for itself.  Can you say…. Happy Camper???
Happy, Happy!!!
