I love old friends. Especially when they come back into your life.
I made friends with Jan back when I was working for Jefferson Bank. As a payroll person in those days, I went to the Ceridian Insight's Conference in San Antonio. Being my first ever Convention, I went to the beginner's meeting where we were clued in on how things worked and given hints and helps to make the conference worth the money my company was spending to send me there for a week. Jan sat next to me at the Beginner's meeting and we struck up a conversation. We found ourselves going to several of the same classes and we spent most of the week enjoying each other's company.
She was from Nashville and then later moved to Maryland, around the D.C. area. We saw each other again in Orlando and over the time I was involved in HR and Payroll, we talked about different things when we had questions about proper procedures. I even drove down to see her once and she took me on a tour of different sights in Washington, D.C.
From time to time she would call me but I had not heard from her in a while. She had moved to the D.C. area to be near to her only child... a daughter... and her family.
She has struggled to keep in jobs that would support her in the expensive area they live in. But she had tired of being in charge of areas where the company owners were trying to take short cuts in payroll to have a better bottom line. So she is currently without work.
She called me recently just to catch up. She is having difficulty finding work. But she is also having trouble dealing with her daughter and her family. I do not know all of the things going on, but there is a great deal of stress and tears and sleepless nights.
Until now, I have wondered why I have had so many unhappy things in my life. Divorce, a child running away from home, job losses and most recently death of my parents and my husband. I know that everyone goes through these things at one time or another. No one goes through life completely unscathed. But I have been able to do some quick prayers and digging deeply into my experiences to help her stop and think about things so she can deal with them.
I am grateful for my experiences. I now see a purpose for everything in just being able to help my friend. We may not have been the kind of friends who ran around together, went to movies or had afternoon teas. But from the first week in San Antonio, we have had a special bond. And I am hoping that we will continue to be there to help each other.
Enjoy the ramblings and life events of an aging woman. Just the normal struggles of one person in the world today, trying to make a tiny mark on those whose lives I have touched.

Parkesburg Walmart is terrible these days.....
I remember when they announced that Parkesburg.... little tiny Parkesburg.... was going to get a Walmart Supercenter. Rudy and I swore we would not go on the day they opened, but we did and I think we each went in there everyday for a week or more. It was remarkable to see all of the merchandise in so many departments.... including food.... at such nice prices. It was clean and bright and full of light and friendly people and plenty of room to wander around.
Over the years, as with anything, it has changed. Usually things only get better. At first it did improve. New departments, more things to buy. But then the aisles got smaller and things got more crowded and the floors were less clean and some areas became neglected. They took areas away, like fabric, and then they would bring things back, like fabric.
As I am now on Medicare, I had signed up, through Humana, to use their Walmart Prescription Plan. I changed to that plan in 2015 and with my medications, I never even reached past level 2. It is wonderful to have my medications at an affordable level.... sometimes.
Last year that plan worked very well. This year, not so much.
In January I saw my doctor on January 6th. He authorized new scripts for my meds and it was sent to the Parkesburg Walmart. I needed to get refills. I knew the cholesterol med would not be filled because it had gotten out of sync with the others when my cardiologist changed what I was taking. I waited and waited for the Walmart text message to say that they were ready to be picked up. I finally checked online to see that they were ready. So up I go. I wait in line and finally get to the counter and they tell me I need to provide them with a new card. But I had not changed anything so I had a new card. But Walmart insisted that I needed to give them a new card. I was livid. I knew that I was right, but they would not hear of it. So I went outside, called my insurance guy. We called Medicare folks and verified that I was still on Humana and there was no new card.
So back into Walamrt, armed with correct information and challenged them. This time, they took the time to run it through Humana.... and it was amazing, they paid all of my claims.
Strike ONE for Walmart.
Last week I called in the refill for my cholesterol medication. I wanted to make sure that they processed it as THEIR records online indicated it has been filled on January 6th when it was not. I show up to pick it up and they tell me it is too soon to get it filled. Their records showed I had gotten it on January 6th. I argued that I had not. The only choice I had was to pay full price for it. I declined and headed home, livid again.
I did not act on anything last week. I cooled down and finally got online at the Human site and downloaded my claims. It clearly showed that 11/25/2015 was the last refill and NOT on January 6, 2016. I took that information back to Walmart and when they ran it through their system, it was paid for! Vindicated, yet again. But I really get annoyed when I am treated like I am a totally stupid senior citizen. And they are truly rude and arrogant when they were dealing with me.
I waited, today, to get my medication before they changed their minds. I went to the fabric area.... duh! I was surprised to find someone there to cut fabric. Usually I have to go to the electronics area to find someone who can call for someone to cut fabric. But there were actually three people there today, so I picked up some fabric. Then I had to use the facilities... I try not to have to use public restrooms. This one was disgusting. Of the 6 stalls, only 2 had toilets that appeared to flush. The rest were full of toilet paper. The handicapped stall had pee droplets on the seat and the big toilet paper holder was broken and hanging open. But it did have toilet paper. I wiped up the seat and did what had to be done, but I will think twice about ever using it again.
I actually think I may have to write a letter to Walmart, both National as well as the local Walmart. I wonder if it would make any kind of difference???
Why do people think that because I am getting older, that I am suddenly becoming stupid and senile??? Glad that I know I am not!!

Busy, snowy week.... but could it be only the beginning?
It has been a very busy week.
Sunday was a quiet day. Sunday School and Church. Our new pastor once again had the sermon. He was not our official pastor as his credentials and final approval had not been completed. He is already making his mark on things. When we arrived for services, he had removed the podium from the stage and had already loaded his sermon onto the computer system. I am assuming that he had been practicing all week. He had not told anyone and the worship leaders and song leaders were caught a bit off guard with nothing for their papers. This is going to be an interesting transition.
Monday morning I headed to the bank to deposit some checks and then into Downingtown to go to Joann Fabrics. I needed to pick up a piece of fabric to finish off a overdue Christmas present. I thought I had fabric that would work, but found that I did not. While there, I was looking into Home Deco fabric to use on Marcia Beth's purse but could not find anything that I needed. But I came across Cotton Duck fabric with is sturdier than regular cotton and they had purple and orange colors AND it was on sale. I bought three yards of each and at 60" width, I should have more than enough. Now I just have to get approval for the style purse Marcia Beth wants.
Snow started late Monday evening. Snowed off and on all day Tuesday. Did not appear to be amounting to much. Late in the afternoon it began coming down in big flakes. But when I went to bed, it had not yet started sticking to the roads and was just beginning to stick to the driveway.
Woke up to bright sunshine and about 5 inches of snow on the ground and in parts of the driveway. Wendy Kennel had called and offered to come over and help me shovel. She was off work and did not want me to hurt myself clearing away the snow. I promised her I would call if I needed help. Took only about 45 minutes to plow the little bit of snow off the driveway. By the time I had finished, the sun had already started melting the thin layer that was left behind. I shoveled the little I could not get to and could even get into the garage if I wanted to get to the Elantra.
Wednesday evening was worship committee meeting at church. Pastor Randy was there for the first time. He announced to us that he had been at his final approval meeting that day and he is now officially our new pastor. The Bishop, Steve Weaver, will be at our church service this Sunday to do the commissioning service for the new Pastor. Not much warning but we will be glad when everything is completed.
Off and on all week, I have been sewing. I have also been looking for additional purse patterns. I have quite a few, now, for Marcia Beth to choose from. The thing is, I also want to make some of them. I will either add this to my Fancy Gap projects or also make them a project for OBX.
Today, I have been really busy. I cleaned up the kitchen first, then gave both dogs a bath. Miles was showing some discoloration on his belly, so I was afraid that his skin infection was coming back. He was not digging at any body part, except is paws and he has done that since I first brought him home. So he got another good bath with is medicated shampoo. Next it was Winston's turn. He had a bit of a goopy butt but mostly he was just dirty. I am always amazed how dirty he can get as digging in frozen ground is hard. They are both curled up on their pillows, sleeping off their traumatic day!
Tomorrow is supposed to be a Downton Abbey tea in Christiana. But we may also be getting snow. I am going with Marge Krumrine. I will check with her later today.
So, I am off to start laundry and then head back to the sewing room to work on the remainder of the overdue Christmas presents/

A Nice Saturday....
Slept in until close to 9:00 AM, with the normal early morning (around 7:00 AM) pee break and dog feeding. A bit of coffee and cleaned up the kitchen.
Admired the dining room table. It really does look nice and I am also enjoying the fact that the Christmas decorations are finally down. I was really enjoying them this year, more so than other years. I guess I am moving forward with my mourning. Sometimes it seems like I am either stuck or going backwards. But then I find things that show I am moving forward.
Spent the afternoon in the sewing room. I am still making Christmas presents for last year. Poor Rob and Kate did not get their box mailed because I found I was not quite ready to send it as their gifts were not complete. So I am now working on their items so I can get them mailed as soon as I get them complete. I cannot tell you what they are until I get them delivered. But, I promise I will let you know and send pictures!
Came upstairs to let the dogs out and figure out dinner. I grilled burgers, and made mushroom and Swiss burgers with some fries. Even grilled a burger for each of the dogs. They think they are very spoiled pooches.
I spent the evening looking through purse patterns. My cousin, Marcia Beth Sinnott, is trying to see if I can find a purse pattern that will be what she is trying to find for her Granddaughter using the colors of Evansville University where Erin Sinnott is a rising basketball star. So I was trying to find fabric with the college logo (neither Marcia or I could come across any) or an embroidery design (I scored on that one) so now all we have to do is agree on the purse style. It was fun and I look forward to trying to help them out, but it is one of the reasons I never quite get all of my projects done. I am always available to help others.....
So, I have dogs sleeping off their burger high on floor pillows. I am getting ready for bed. Church tomorrow followed by lunch served by Sheila to her Small Group and they invited me to come along.
Snow possibly on Monday, another 2 to 4 inches. After the first storm that is more like a dusting!!
Here are a couple of pictures of my dining room table. I have already piles a couple of things on it. I just need a place to dump stuff. But I need to learn how to put things away!!!

Shopping, I hate when I have to go shopping.... NOT!
Yesterday I picked up Patty and we headed up to East Earl, PA and the Goodville Fabric Outlet. It is now called Zinck's. The building itself is farther off the road than one would expect. I am glad that Patty had been there before. I am not sure I would have traveled far enough back to have found it. Inside the door is the quilt fabric area. Off the the left was the homespun room. Lots of pretty fabrics in both of them. Beyond that area was an actual warehouse. All manner of fabric on bolts. Honestly, some of it was mystery fabric.... meaning it was stiff and rough and I have no idea what it was made out of or what one might do with it. But there were knits, and fleece and athletic fabric, flannels, tee-shirt fabric, wool, etc., etc. Prices were not bad on any of it. So, if you want to make a table cloth or napkins to match, this is the place to start looking.
Patty and I were re-buying fabric that we had already purchased to make a log cabin cross wall hanging for the church. Unfortunately, an error in cutting had us going back and buying all new. But we found some really nice fabric and in two different colors. So it may have been a costly mistake, but it is going to look awesome.
I found several pretty fabrics as well. I found a lovely gray that will go into my stash after I make a bow tie for Brian. I also found another bow tie fabric. I am very pleased to have found this place and will go back for sure when I am looking for a project.
We then headed out to go to Yoder's buffet, where we had eaten before. As we were sitting at the light at Route 322 and Route 23, Patty motioned to a fabric shop where a sewing machine dealer/repair place also lives. Martin's had on display a beautiful quilting machine and frame setup. A Baby Lock longarm quilt machine on a 10 foot frame. It could be computer run or manually run either meandering or using pantographs. If I could find the 14 feet by 6 or 7 feet in a room and then the $14,000+, it could be set up in my house and I could start doing quilting for myself and for others as a business. Something to think about and dream about!!!
After lunch, we headed over to Good's and I found some more fabric. Yardage to do some more 4-way place mats and another bow tie fabric. Look out, Brian, you will have some smart new ties arriving soon. I also found a couple of round table cloths for my dining room table in some nifty colors.
Today, I finally took my Christmas decorations down. After going to the bank, I headed to Walmart and found a vase and some artificial flowers to dress up the dining table and the new blue table cloth. So I was doing the table top cleaning that I have to do from time to time, arranging flowers (I did two, I had found clear floral marbles at Walmart on sale so I added them to an arrangement that I already had before working on the new ones). Now, if I could only keep the table clear. I say that every time and it always gets piled high with stuff. But I will keep trying.
Tomorrow is cleaning up the kitchen and then sewing!!! I am excited.

A Snoggy Night
Yesterday was a very gray and rainy day. The temperatures went up into the 50's. Even as late as 6:00 PM, the outside temp was reading 50 degrees. But there was a great deal of rain falling during the day.
When one has snow pack on the ground from a major storm and the temps go up into the nice, springtime range and then rain, you can end up with fog. The mist is evaporating from the snow and creates a misty fog, even while rain is coming down from the clouds. I call it snog.... snow fog!
Normally I would not even think about going out on a foggy night, especially in the rain. Driving at night seems to be getting more difficult the older I get. And while I would prefer not to, there are times when one must.
There is a quilt shop nearby, The Quilt Ledger in Christiana, and every Wednesday night the owner, Leslie Reese, opens her shop for Lady's Night. Starting at 6"00 PM, we can go, bring our machines or projects and just sew away. Plus, if you buy anything, she gives you 10% off.
Leslie has a couple of longarm quilters that she uses in her shop. I have been taking my finished quilt tops to Shelli Smith in Middletown, DE. But sometimes it is just such a long drive, now, to get there and Shelli has such a schedule that it might be a couple of weeks to get into see her. So I met Cindy at The Quilt Ledger last night.
I have just finished an adorable baby quilt for a young family I feel very close to. The baby is due on the 18th, so I will not make that date, but I want to get this gift off to them as soon as I can. So, I met with Cindy and went over the quilt and the designs for the quilting. We selected the perfect design to go with this quilt and she has taken it off to her place. Hopefully within a couple of weeks, I will get it back, get the binding done and off it will go. I will post pictures of the finished product once they receive it.
But it was a very snoggy night. There were a couple of places where I lost the road I was driving on. But going slowly and using my fog lights, I was just fine.
Today I am off on another adventure. Patty and I are off to shop for fabric, again. I hate when the happens..... not! She is taking me to 2 new places around here to get fabric. What can be better than that!

January Thaw
After not sleeping well a couple of nights ago, I have had two straight 9 hour plus nights. Making up for lost sleep?? Perhaps. But it is really nice to see that I am now having solid hours of sleep.
I have a Fitbit Flex that I wear most days. Most people who wear them are mainly keeping track of the number of steps that they take in a 24 hour period. I look at that as well, but I primarily got the silly thing to monitor my sleep.
Yesterday I charged my Flex. The only drawback to these little bits is that they do need to be charged from time to time. So I charged mine to show 5 bars. But this morning the online dashboard indicated that it was running low. And sure enough, it showed no power. Have no idea why. I have only had the silly thing a year. So I am charging it again. I will let you know.
The last couple of days have been abnormally warm for January. The sun has been bright, but yesterday it was gray and cloudy with rain. Temperatures outside have been in the high 40's and into the 50's. Tomorrow it may get to 60 with rain. Most people would refer to this as the January thaw. I am calling it the great snow reducer.
The tall walls that were created when Danny used the snow blower to open up a place in the yard for them to pee have now shrunk down to almost nothing. If the warm weather continues for today and tomorrow, all but the big mounds should be pretty much gone. Too bad that I could not have kept the snow unplowed. It might all be gone by now!!!
My weather guys are looking at more snow come Monday and then later in the week. My son, Rob, is agreeing, but we are not talking nearly the amount of snow from the last storm. Thank goodness! But after the 30+ inches from before, even a foot of snow does not sound all that bad!
I will be heading out to the store shortly. I have been in a soup making mood. I have made two pots of beef barley soup. I am looking for the makings for french onion soup. It is one of my favorites.
Still have Christmas decorations up in the house. Need to get them down and back in the attic. Just not wanting to do that, yet!
