A Fun Friday with Linda....

This blog has been a long way coming.  Without internet at the Lake House, I had prepared this in Word at the cabin so I could copy and paste it into the blog.  Well, that did not work.  Words... yes, they transferred.  Pictures, not so much.  Just little squares inside the big blocks.

So I have now made it to Brian's house in Minneapolis and will remake the blog info before moving on with the tales of my trip.  I will copy and paste the sparse explanation of the Fun Friday and then upload the pictures into the blog so you can actually see them.  So, here goes.....

A Fun Friday with Linda….

After getting somewhat rested from my days of driving, my cousin, Linda Mehnert, had made plans for us to have a very busy Friday.  It started, as all days do here in Lake Villa, by heading for coffee at what used to be Julie’s Coffee but is now Daisy’s Art Bin.  We chatted with the regulars then headed back to let the dogs out before heading to Liberty Sports Center for a delightful, local quilt show put on by one of the local guilds.

For $6.00, we were able to walk through the part of the complex dedicated to the quilts for as long as we cared to, until 4:00 PM.  Most of the quilts were by the members.  I noted some very minor flaws but I could not have done much better.  There were a couple of vendors there as well.  I took pictures.  Lots of pictures, but I will only post a few today.  I am still working without internet so I am doing this on my little laptop on Word and will copy and upload to my blog before heading to Minnesota tomorrow morning.

Since I am adding the pictures separately, I will try to match the quilt to the description card,  There were some really lovely quilts.

In some instances the quilting that was done was what made the quilt and sometimes it was both.

This was one of our favorite quilts.  The maker was in the hall and came to answer Linda's questions.  I found the quilting and the design worked very well together.  We voted this one as one of favorites in the show.

Tee shirt quilts had a small corner.  These two were done differently and looked wonderful.

This Gentleman was selling a new fangled fence for making perfect seams.  Yes, I bought a set, but he was very entertaining, as well.  For those who know J J Walker, he reminded me a great deal of J J.

There were quilts everywhere you looked.

All of the Quilts of Valor above were part of the Guild Challenge for this show.  They even had a booth where ladies could help sew blaocks to go into one that was being made at the show.

This rag quilt was made up of handkerchiefs.  Some were older, some not so old.  I likes the way the attached them to a uniform size square, sandwiched and quilted them and then made them into a rag quilt.  Would probably not do thid to really old hankies, but it made a lovely quilt.

Just some more of the interesting quilts that were there.

Mini quilts and wall hangings.  The last one was covered in crystals.  Really blingy.

After eating dinner…. Leftovers from the night before… Linda picked me up again for an evening painting at the Periwinkle.  There were 6 of us making a pumpkin painting on a black gesso covered canvas.  A little wine made the experience a great deal of fun.

Pictures are here…

We started out by putting black Gesso all over our square canvas.

These folks sat across from me.  Please note the wine glass.  I think it helps unleash one's creative genius!

This is my cousin, Linda, using a small dryer to fast dry her base.

Then we take stencils and colored acrylic paints and add some color and decoration to the canvas.

Then, using regular chalk, we drew our pumpkins.  This was my 'rough' sketch.

This is Linda working on her sketch.  After this, we added the color to the pumpkins.  The theroy was to paint up to the chalk and then, when the aint dried, to remove the chalk, leaving black lines.  I got carried away with my apinting and had to add my lines back in.

Finished products.  Linda's was on top, The bottom left was a friend of Linda's, whose name excapes me at the moment.  The bottom left was mine.  I added some Modge Podge and tissue paper to the hat on mine.  He really looks better in person.  He will join my wall of fame when I get home.

That takes care of Friday.  I will catch up on the trip to Minnesota in the next blog....

Having a great times and the 'boys' are doing fine.
